cShops grew out of 25+ years of ServiceSpace experiments in gift economy. What started as a small group of friends volunteering together has blossomed into a global ecosystem of projects—all run 100% by volunteers.
From KindSpring (1+ million acts of kindness) to DailyGood (daily inspiration since 1998) to Awakin (weekly circles in 100+ cities)— ServiceSpace has been quietly nurturing a culture of generosity.
The Paradox
Why Multiple Currencies?
Money allows us to coordinate the efforts of billions—and that's remarkable. But somewhere along the way, we idolized it for stripping away the "encumbrances" of relationship.
Herein lies the paradox: the very thing that brings us bounty is also the very thing that starves us of essential nutrients. When we can exist devoid of relationships, we lose something vital.
At cShops, we're not trying to eliminate money—we're trying to re-imbue it with the relational richness that our economic evolution so efficiently stripped out. We honor time, kindness, creativity, community, attention, and yes, financial contributions—because wealth is bigger than dollars.
